What to Wear or Not to Wear? / by Les Dishman

As a corporate professional, you understand the importance of making a good first impression. You know this and you’ve likely seen how first impressions can often be lasting (for better or worse). The old adage that reminds you to dress not for your current position, but instead for your next position is actually sound career advice. That “dressing for success” approach also extends to the headshots you present to the world. A great #headshot, coupled with the right clothes, can help you project confidence, professionalism, personality, trustworthiness and approachability in the eyes of clients and colleagues.

Here are some tips on the best clothing choices when you’re considering updating your existing headshot or sitting for your very first corporate headshot.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

  • Simplicity is key. Avoid busy patterns, logos, or clothing with a lot of texture that could distract from your face. Instead, choose solid colors and clean lines that will help draw attention to your eyes, your expression, and your personality.

CHOOSE NEUTRAL COLORS

  • Make sure that your clothes are clean and free of lint and pet hair.  Make sure that the style is current – not trendy.  You may wish to consider bringing a lint roller to your headshot or portrait session.

  • For men, neutral colors like black, white, gray, and navy blue are always a safe bet for headshot clothing. They're classic, timeless, and won't clash with the background or other elements of the photo. Plus, they can be dressed up or down depending on the client's profession and personal style.

  • For women, a blouse and skirt, a blouse and trousers, or a suit jacket over a shift dress makes a great option.  Women may also wish to consider knits and jersey fabrics, as they lay nicely on the body.  Avoid stiff fabrics that don’t move well.

  • While bright colors can be fun and eye-catching in everyday life, they can be distracting in headshots. They can also reflect onto the face, causing color casts and other issues that can be difficult to correct in post-processing. It IS good to add a pop of color however. Just do so in subtle ways, like with a scarf or tie. If you’re stuck on what colors “go” with other colors, take a few minutes to read this brief article about color science (a fancy way of describing how colors can compliment each other) and use that to make some color decisions.

CHOOSE WELL FITTING (and appropriate) CLOTHING

  • One simple mistake that people sometimes when choosing their clothing is to wear something that doesn't fit properly. Clothes that are too loose or too tight can make you appear unprofessional, unkempt, and uncomfortable. Clothes that are fitted to you specifically will make you look better, more comfortable, and more professional.

  • Avoid shiny or reflective fabrics. Shiny or reflective fabrics like silk, satin, or sequins can reflect light in ways that make the subject look washed out or overly bright. They can also create hot spots or glare in the photo. Instead, choose matte fabrics that will absorb light and create a more even, flattering appearance.

  • Finally, it's important to consider your profession when when you’re considering what to wear for your headshot session. Different professions have different dress codes and expectations, so it's important to choose clothing that will be appropriate for your industry. For example, someone in finance or law might wear a suit and tie, while someone in a more artistic field (musicians, actors, writers, etc) might opt for something more casual and stylish. Your clothing should be defining enough to help you stand out, but be subdued enough that it acts as the “best supporting actor” in the multi-act play that is you.

Choosing the right clothing for your headshot session is (a) a reflection of your personality and (b) essential to creating a professional and polished appearance. By sticking to simple, neutral colors, avoiding bright or reflective fabrics, and choosing clothes that fit well, you can do YOUR part in making your headshot photos the best they can be.
