Overcoming the Fear of Getting Your First Professional Headshot / by Les Dishman

If you have ever seen a modern photoshoot set, you may view the combination of lights, sounds, cameras, and direction as a bit intimidating. That does not have to be the case, however. I know it’s easier said than done, but if you’re considering hiring a photographer for your first set of professional headshots, it may help if you’ll try to remember that the lights and cameras are just tools that your photographer uses to make YOU look YOUR best. It may also help to remember that, among their many talents, a portrait/headshot photographer is also a coach who will work to emphasize your strengths, minimize whatever flaws you may believe you have, and will generally guide you through a series of poses that will make you look great.

And just like public speaking, you’ll feel MUCH better about your session if you prepare for it. Here are some things you can do to “stack the deck” in your favor before you ever step foot in front of a camera.

If you follow these steps and embrace and say “yes!” to the experience, you’ll do YOUR part in ensuring the photos that you and your photographer create together will define and respect you and will elevate your personal brand.

  1. First, remember that a professional headshot portrait session will show your face in much greater detail than perhaps you personally have ever seen. Don’t let that intimidate you! You go through life showing your face to people (friends, family, & strangers) everyday in all kinds of lighting - some of it really, really bad. If you’re concerned with how you look in the photo, you will - in all likelihood - be the only person who feels that way. Everyone else who sees the photo will be impressed at how good you look!

  2. Choose a photographer whose style best meets your expectations for YOUR photos. Don’t hire the “best” headshot photographer if that person’s body of work doesn’t fit your personal aesthetic. Instead, look for a photographer whose style and personality fits yours. You do this by reviewing their posted work, reading past reviews, and interviewing them in person. Remember that that initial meeting is a job interview for the photographer. You’re hiring, so don’t be afraid to ask questions. Photographers LOVE to talk about themselves, so (trust me) they won’t mind. Getting to know someone - even for a little bit - can help you feel more relaxed and confident during the photoshoot.

  3. Plan your outfit and grooming ahead of time. Choose an outfit that makes you feel good and is (a) appropriate for the type of headshot you need and (b) appropriate for the industry you’re currently in or wish to enter. As an example, clothing worn by a magician or musician will be likely completely different than the clothing worn by an accountant or corporate attorney. Take time to get your hair and/or makeup done and make sure your clothes are clean and fit well.

  4. Practice your expressions in the mirror the night prior to your shoot. Experiment with different expressions to see what looks good and feels natural for you. Discuss these poses and expressions with your photographer before shooting. Communicate your expectations to them. Taking this small, but proactive step will help you feel more prepared and confident during the shoot.

  5. Make sure you're well-rested and hydrated on the day of the shoot. This can help you feel more relaxed and focused and can also help reduce any puffiness or dark circles under your eyes.

  6. Trust the photographer: Remember they are there to help you look your best and will guide you through the process. Trust their expertise and don't be afraid to ask questions and make suggestions.
